Horological Meandering

In the newest edition of Patek Philippe's magazine there's an article about water resistance ratings.

Patek claims that now, and from now on, they are testing every watch they make (other than chiming watches) to ensure that the watch is water-proof to 30 meters/3 bar/3 atmospheres. Putting aside whether 30 meters and 3 atmospheres are equivalent, the point Patek makes is that a watch that is water-proof to 30 meters can be worn in the shower and while washing one's hands, and while swimming and diving. So, unless you are a deep diver, you will never have to take off your Patek for any activity in which you participate.

Assuming their testing is accurate I think this is a terrific accomplishment/standard to use. It has always confused me as to why most watch manufacturers claim their watches are water-proof to 30 meters and yet they, and everybody who writes about watches, will tell you that, other than washing your hands, you should not wear your watch for any of these other activities.

Now, I am not going to wear a $500 alligator strap in the shower; and I'm going to wait for other manufacturers to make the same claim before getting a 30 meter watch really wet; but it seems to me Patek is realily onto something here, and every other watchmaker should be joining in on this.

One other point-my understanding of the article is that every one of Patek's watches will show a 30 meter rating from now on-you won't see an Aquanaut with a 100 meter rating anymore.
