I used to have rules...

I used to have rules for my collection. It kept the collection very small and very selective. But the rules were very restrictive. And now, I have no rules. And thus, I've quickly amassed many multiple pieces. And we've got to talk about this the next time we rendezvous in person. But the ones that are the most endearing to me are the ones where I have a personal relationship with the brand. So, no more rule of sticking to four core brands. Just enjoy yourself. And get to know the brand before buying! And check out the great work of independents.
And I don't know about your kids, but most of the next generation I speak to, who have parents who are big collectors, they tell me the following: "expenses of living are increasing" and "they don't see maintaining a large luxurious home as a possibility for the future." Thus, they recommend a diversification of assets. And when it comes to watches, they recommend their parents to "narrow it down to a core collection of a few key and historically significant pieces." One pair of children of a watch collector with a very significant collection have actually basically said, "keep the sentimental and monumental pieces of our family's history, even if they're not valuable nor significant watches (like their father's first watch which was an inexpensive Longines and to sell most of the rest, leaving each child with a practical 6-12 pieces each."
