...your take is pretty close to accurate. I think it's part of why we still get 42mm x 14mm watches with tiny movements.
Love Rolex or hate them, but at least they put out watches that people seem to want. Rugged, accurate, classic-looking without being 'retro.'
In tech (where I worked my entire career) there were things called User Groups. If I worked on a Macintosh, or used a certain type of software, enthusiasts would gather in person or virtually (kind of like this forum) and discuss the products and the changes they'd like to see. These were people who used the product every day to make their living. Manufacturers either participated overtly or covertly, but I guarantee there was always someone at the company in design/development that kept an eye out for what was being said. It was basically free advice from subject matter experts. Companies that turn a blind eye to this can only suffer in the long run...
