Your thoughts could form a best practices guide to wearing fine watches. Most of the people here will, of course, not strictly practice what you preach.
For public service and prominent leadership positions, there is a sense that the positions themselves hold great honour. It is up to the holders of such positions to decide whether wearing an expensive watch will create a distraction or set a positive tone for those who pay attention to such details. The leader of my country wears an IWC Portuguese Regulateur and it's a choice that suggests a respectable defiance of the status quo, as politicians in my country are always aware of appearing out-of-touch. I avoid reading the tabloids, so I have no idea if this gentleman is an avid watch enthusiast.

For your situation
I agree with your thoughts about flashy watches in your work environment. Just wear a classical independent with fantastic finishing and no one will be the wiser. For your hobby it sounds like it's anything goes.

A friend of mine is a finance department chair at a major US university.
He loves his Rolexes (Rolii???) and wears them freely. I asked him about it, as he was doing from the start of his academic career, and he said there were absolutely no comments/problems whatsoever.

My rule is to be as unobtrusive as possible and fit in with the environment. Unwanted attention can be uncomfortable and in some environments, dangerous. In other situations, you'd call attention to yourself if you were "underdressed."

But since you work at the venue, the limit is probably higher. Anything on the dressier side in yellow/rose gold maybe even with diamonds is likely acceptable.
I would agree with the majority of responses. Wear whatever you like whenever. However
I do tend not to wear yellow/rose gold (sports) watches (Rolex) to work as I feel a somewhat more somber profile doesn’t hurt business.
