Horological Meandering

did not mean mandatory literally

but it is hard to ignore the brand. I always told myself I would never (say never) buy a Rolex just because of the huge recognition factor alone. Everybody knows the Rolex crown brand sign. Which is not always a good thing. Can be quite tacky even. But the second mechanical watch I bought was a Milgauss. Haven't regretted it. Even tho it's not the most unique brand to own I really enjoy wearing it.

Other watches I own have far more detailed movements (Nautilus) or complications (CvdK Planetarium) and from that aspect a (almost every) Rolex is plain boring. If you wear a Patek or Audemars and compare that to any Rolex you might even wonder if you paid too much for the damn thing because of it's simplicity. On the other hand the wearability in terms of comfort is probably the best of any sports watch in the world. The (modern)bracelets of Rolex are perfect. Haven't found a better one yet. And if you want a mechanical watch that will run forever without too much hassle Rolex is the brand to go to.

Elegance: no
Practicality: yes

So it's simplicity is it's strong point. Plus it's always nice to have a good 'tool' watch I guess. So maybe I could have better asked: Is Rolex the Swatch of mechanical watches?
