I appreciate WPS (and the PuristS before) as an open forum.
May 13, 2021,15:12 PM
I’ve always taken Hodinkee with a grain of salt, but they’re a major part of the watch scene and I find their articles helpful. Of course, they’re not the source of detailed information or experience that one finds from watch owners on the forums. Jack just posted their terms of service and they seem reasonable to me.
My mechanical watch journey began when I found TZ and Purists 20 years ago when I was looking for a single “good” watch. I still prefer forums to modern networks like Instagram since I prefer deep discussion to a few comments.
Professional media plays a role in our space and Hodinkee is more relevant to the enthusiast than the print media was (although I always liked that WatchTime put pieces on a timer in their reviews). Just as in other spaces supported by advertising and sales, I wouldn’t rely on a single source for a purchasing decision.

On Hodinkee, censorship, conflicts of interest and The Purist
By: Catulle : May 12th, 2021-16:41
There is a post on this site that refers to Hodinkee and its evolution from a rather serious venue for reviewing watches and the watch industry to becoming another internet watch merchant. Indeed, Hodinkee has “monetized” its name and the reputation built...
I read it as only half a rant
By: VinnieD : May 12th, 2021-16:46
I am convinced this remains a very open and transparent forum, free from any commercial chains where contributors are well educated and nice to deal with. I take the opportunity to thank all moderators for their time and contributions: may it continue thi...
Two sites are incomparable
By: watch-guy.com : May 13th, 2021-04:43
1. Hodinkee is unashamably commercial. It may not have started off that way but the site is owned by ome of the major luxury brands ( cant remnber which) Money was exchanged and the owners want a return 2. PPro- totally the opposite. A non commercial site...
Catulle, you are always welcome here, my friend. We are all friends, here, we belong to a Great Community, and e can alway disagree without having to destroy our own keyboard. That's the greatness of our virtual home.

Watchprosite is Passion, Opinion and Information. That's our motto. And that's a wonderful one. We discourage topic which lead to heated discussions, only for the sake of our house, such as religion, politics, well you got my draw. For the rest, all is al...
I have been lurking too, but..

I appreciate your opinion. Please take care of yourself, life is too short for conflict. I find myself in conflict at times, on this site also. But for me, I realize everyone has their reason for doing whatever it is they do. As such, I have to restrict m...
I agree with you regarding this site, we are fortunate.

Thank you for your post, your opinion. There are many disagreeable sites and people, we should not allow them to impact our participation negatively. By speaking up and continuing to be part of the conversation we collectively dampen the effect they have....
A lot of text
By: Weems@8 : May 12th, 2021-17:12
Yes, here is no commercial influence of the brands. Just the love for watches and nice conversations. Interest in each other and watches. Other platforms are harsh, catching flies off each other. What i dislike there is the talking about cheap watches lik...
I look at it like this.......
By: DouglasM : May 12th, 2021-17:14
Hodinkee is desert; mostly fluff that will fill you up, but provides little nutrients; something you can have, but not get too much of. The real meal is sites like WatchProSite, with honest information and little fluff which provides horological "nutrient...

An old mentor always stressed, "beware the prophet that benefits from their own message". His words are still relevant here and today.
Thanks for your well written post.

I agree 100%. I have been quite angry about this forum 10 times or so in twp years, which is way less then most other forums. I guess there is just one other forum, beginning with watch as well, which gave me zero angry moments. But then, its much less pe...

everyone does something for a reason. if you do not agree with that particular reason, move on. I believe one has a choice at this time.
WPS is a special place
By: slungu : May 12th, 2021-19:57
I think WPS is a very nice place that I have rediscovered after a larger absence also from the watch hobby and I think it is one of the few places where somebody like me with a faible for vintage mostly slim top( as in VC/AP/PP plus Chopard/Piaget ) watch...
The criticism of Ben Clymer is unfair.
By: MichaelC : May 13th, 2021-15:03
I met Ben maybe twice in my previous years covering AP events. The last time was probably around 2014 or so, in fact we sat next to each other at dinner. I have not spoken with him since. Yes, Ben went to Columbia. My opinion after conversing for an hour+...
Concur with this.
By: CR : May 13th, 2021-22:57
I did enjoy Hodinkee more before they started selling things. I miss the old days. But kudos to Ben for building such a successful enterprise legally and without what I believe is some ongoing pattern of nefarious deception. Did they make mistakes? Sure, ...
Agreed.
By: pejp : May 15th, 2021-00:36
I started reading Hodinkee very early, and I attended their first ever pop event (think it was 2011), and I’ve actually bought a watch from Ben (privately, not via Hodinkee) around 2012. He also used to come to RedBar occasionally. I’ve always found him t...
