I started reading Hodinkee very early, and I attended their first ever pop event (think it was 2011), and I’ve actually bought a watch from Ben (privately, not via Hodinkee) around 2012. He also used to come to RedBar occasionally. I’ve always found him to be a decent guy. I don’t really get the criticism. I love watches, but at the end of the day, we’re not talking life and death here. I don’t hold watch journalists to the same standards as true news journalists. He built something from scratch, it’s changed over time, I admit I don’t really enjoy it like I used to, but I don’t understand why people have a problem with that. Everyone can pretend that they’re completely pure and not motivated by money, but I can’t really see how he could not want to keep building, monetizing, expanding etc...it’s not like he has ever pretended that it’s just a blog or a community forum.
