Hi, my question is concerned with how does one go about comparing the level of finishing / quality / craftmanship in two highly regarded movements? The two watches in question are the Datograph by Lange and the PanoNavigator by Glashutte. I have had the pleasure of studying both under a 10X loupe, unfortunately not at the same time. To the best of my eye, they both appear finished to an extremely high standard.
I guess a related question is - are high-end Glashutte movements finished to the same extent and quality as Lange? Think watches at similar price points by each manufacturer such as above. I've read some folks opinion that "Lange is slightly better finished than Glashutte" but then the comment stops and no further justification is given. So whether true or not, what are the tangible reasons for the statement?
Finally, are there any salient differences in the manufacturing techniques / use of machines versus hand-made / craftsmanship etc. between Lange and Glashutte that lead to a quality difference between these movements? (to keep the question narrow, let's stay between the Dato and the PanoNavigator). Both houses truly represent fine German watchmaking at its best, are their any salient differences in approach to quality?
Thanks in advance for any responses. I think as my knowledge and love of horology increases, so my need to know at a more granular level what exactly a movement represents increases. Learning how to compare craftsmanship and finish across different movements is my next step and - although I am sure there is a subjective component to this - some elements are also objective. Thanks to anyone who can help me on my way. I'll also try the search function to see what I can find.
Best regards,
