2016 Grand Prix of Long Beach and Corvette Racing GTLM
Apr 17, 2016,17:00 PM
As a Corvette fan, I look forward every year in April to visit the Corvette Corral and cheer on the race team at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Chevrolet and Corvette put on a really nice hospitality area with private parking for 100 Corvettes. Weather was perfect on Saturday and had a nice drive with my Stingray Convertible down to the Long Beach area.
As in the past, there were plenty of activities throughout the day along with the practice sessions in Indy Car, the Pro/Celebrity race and ending the afternoon with the Sports Car Grand Prix.
There were several seminars given by Chevrolet Corvette, Michelin, and Mobil 1 representatives. They also gave out some cool prizes (which unfortunately I didn't win any).
Lunch and refreshments were served.
And in the afternoon we had Ron Fellows talk about his wins with Corvette in previous years, and about his High Performance Drive School at Spring Mountain near Las Vegas. This is the official driving school of Corvette. In fact Chevrolet covers a large portion of the racing school for all new Corvette C7 Stingray owners. Since I recently purchased a 2016 convertible C7 I'm looking forward to attending later this year.
With less than 3 minutes remaining in the race, the #4 Corvette driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin, was leading the GTLM class but was hit from behing by the fools at Porsche in their 911's. Disappointing for Corvette fans but at least they were able to have a podium finish in 2nd place. It's really sad to see such poor tactics by Porsche, they were penalized but the 911 didn't even finish the race and pulled into pit lane. The 911 driven by Nick Tandy was in 3rd place and drove around the crash to finish in first.
It was an exciting race and even though Corvette didn't take the overall win they scored points coming in 2nd and will look forward to the next race at Laguna Seca.
