... I have a love affair with the Ford Mustang, a car which I learned about in 1964 when I was a 16 years old ladd reading about its launching through the pages of the Spanish edition of Popular Mechanics magazine (Mecanica Popular down here) Wow! I dreamed for years with that little car which innaugurate the "Pony cars" era!!
Very very few Mustangs arrived to my Country in those early years of 1965, 66, 67 and 68 which were the golden era of the classic Mustang. Importation of foreign cars was forbidden and the cars which arrived with special permissions were so expensive they were bought only by a small elite.
In February 1966 my Dad invited me to my first trip to the USA. That was an unforgettable experience of traveling with my Dad during a whole month through the US we made a two week drive in a 66 two door Galaxie from Miami to San Francisco including the famous Route 66.
The first thing I asked my Dad as soon as we arrived to Miami, and before our trip to SF, was to rent a Mustang. It was a 66 red coupe hardtop with a 289 V8 engine inside. My God! I touched the sky! We kept the little pony along one full week, and I wished to sleep inside instead to rest in our hotel room!!
Of course I drooled with the scenes of Steve Mc Queen and his green 68 Mustang in Bullit and it added fuel to my love for the model. But the 66 coupe kept being my favorite Mustang till today.
In 1979 I bought a brand new Mustang coupe 2,3 L Turbo. It was not the best Mustang, but it was a Mustang.
And in around 1998 my son and me bought a decrepit 1966 Mustang hardtop coupe with a 6 cylinder which my son restored to brand new specs. He worked a lot, and I financed, suffered and enjoyed with him!
I travel to the USA rather often, and try to drive a rented Mustang every time so I have had the pleasure to ride a different pony through the years. I keep loving them, but my heart still is with the 66 model.
Regret I don´t have pictures of our 66 with watches. It seats nowadays in my son´s garage. I have to ask him for a ride one day to take some shots with my watches.
I am showing below, some of the Mustangs I am mentioning in this posts as well as some shots of watches I took with my rented Mustangs in my visits to USA.
Have a nice Week end dear Art and all our dear friends here at PuristS!! Cheers! Abel
