. . . it was more of a mental hurdle rather than purely material?
My experience with the Patek 5085/1A is a case in point. I was seriously considering it ten years ago, but ended up getting another Karrée perpetual instead, partly due to a modest yet significant difference in cost. A few years later, when the 5085/1A was discontinued and the secondary market price was even higher than original list, I was mentally prepared to spend that kind of money, but an opportunity never surfaced.
Missing out on the 5085/1A doesn't bother me too much, but I might not have missed out at all if my sensibilities at the time when it was a prime consideration had been a little less restrictive.
