Massive Vintage 48mm Breitling Chronomat 0818

Apr 24, 2020,19:17 PM

I have twin ca. 1968 Breitling Chronomat 0818’s that are massive at 48mm and 14mm thick (weight unknown).
These two are in extremely nice overall condition with the white dial version being NOS.
This is a manual winding triple chronograph powered by a gorgeous Venus cal. 178 that keeps spot-on time.
These two are among my favorite pieces and get lots of compliments/ inquiries.

With my 6.5" wrist, I can totally pull off the right 34mm watch. Vintage Tudor Small Rose, vintage Omega Sea Master, a vintage Zodiac Kingline. Sure, 36mm to 39mm is probably my sweet spot, and we can all wear a 42mm Omega Speedmaster Professional perfect...

Here's my heaviest...

Fortis B42 42mm x 15mm and 216 grams, almost half a pound. The heaviest and thickest I own, although not largest diameter. It's probably more of a tank than a whale and I treat it like one. It takes a lot of abuse as you can see by the wear. ...

Well, maybe a pygmy whale... Diam.: 45mm Height: 14.5mm Weight: 97g (without strap and buckle) ...and as a bonus: a whole pod! 4 over 44mm ...

Me too, but I attribute it to the Ti caseback and buckle - and the comparatively tiny El Primero inside.

 By: Modernahab : April 25th, 2020-12:48
Also, I'm not sure how the density of bronze compares to SS, much less gold or platinum. OK, took the time to look it up, and bronze and SS aren't too far off in density - though both variable, based upon the exact alloy.

Thank you! Given that I'm not that big a guy, I'm not sure how I wound up with four 44mm+ watches, but I enjoy them all.

 By: Modernahab : April 25th, 2020-12:53
They all fit with some of my (7" - 7 1/8") wrist showing past the lugs. That could be because they all have short, sharply downward-turning lugs that hug the wrist - even the Zenith.
