I actually somewhat disagree

Looking far into the future is a risky game, but I would say that 3d printing will make slight improvements in efficiency and possibly give smaller makers more flexibility, but not "revolutionize" the industry. With multi-axis wire EDM or LIGA I can make nearly any shape I can envision in 3 dimensions, in a wide range of materials. What's going to revolutionize the industry is that, the ability to make an almost unlimited range of shapes and the freedom that gives designers. 3d printing is one possible technology, but i think it's not going to be the dominant one.

Something else to consider is that most of the industry is still a mass-production industry. Setup costs for milling and stamping may be very high, but they are can be amortized out in a way that single-piece work like 3d printing (and wire EDM) cannot
