You could use a pocket watch or alternatively a wrist watch in white metal time only (no seconds, no date, no complication). In former times (1920-30's) they also use heavily diamond/ruby/saphire encrusted watches and dress set's. Early 30's Art Déco dres...  

I had just initiated a search for a proper vintage pocket watch. As far as black tie is concerned: I just don’t like a watch with black tie. Somehow I feel it’s inappropriate

But formal rules would allow as long as utmost sublime as described. The modest gentlemen are the background the appearance and dress of the ladies is crescendo at those events - they should sparkle in color and jewels.
