Vacheron Constantin

1955, the end of a era

Hi Dean, good to see you are still the font of knowledge for vintage Vacheron.
Sometime around 1948, they started the guilloche dials, and the applied Maltese cross had about the same time starting date.
My theory is that someone got a free hand in design about 1947, thus began the greatest period of design for the Company. And then, in 1955, they either retired or passed away, because everything after that was downhill.. I wish Alex could have figured that out while he was there. Dials, cases, and colors put them above PP for a brief period of time. These were the things they did best.
There are a lot of variations within the application of the cross and the guilloche patterns. But no documentation in this regard. My collecting focuses on this period, what i call the esthetic period. When watch design was fully functional and yet unambiguously beautiful. The very antithesis of the overseas, and the whole GG design ethos.
