Thursday is Quote Day... this time I kick off the weekly thema

with a single quote and some homework for additional credit...

"Atque metum tantum concepit tunc mea mater, / Ut pareret geminos, meque metumque simul" - Thomas Hobbes (used as the epigraph for "The Pleasure of the Text" by Roland Barthes)

Translation: "And thus with so much fear (that) my mother conceived at that time, that she gave birth to twins, to me and to Fear at the same time." - Thomas Hobbes

Roland Barthes (uncredited publicity still)

You might wonder why I am going on about Barthes rather than Hobbes... that's the homework bit.

Roland Barthes is an author that is so compact and full that you want to quote him, but without context the 'one liners' can be a one way trip down the rabbit hole.  I am not suggesting you actually read "The Pleasure of the Text" by Roland Barthes, that might be too much...subtle nudge.  Rather start with an article about the Barthes's essay (Link).
