This is the saddest news...
to break it a long time. Grew up with this band from my teens and travelled to the states especially to see them during their R40 tour. So many memories associated with each album, I couldn’t sleep the night before waiting on each new release. Peart was my idol, he was always the best drummer in the world for me, this news has brought me to tears. Ironically I turned to my birth month, March in this years calendar (something I buy every year) and look who it is! Aptly named the “Professor”, the guy was a genius who I will miss so very much. This weekend watches don’t seem that important.

I count myself fortunate to have seen them more than a few times over more than the last several years. Absolutely freaking gutted. RIP Professor, and best wishes to your friends and family.

And always went when they came to town over the last 15 yrs or so. Such incredible experiences that I will miss deeply.

Indeed. And there was never a question of touring without Neil.
No Neil (or Alex or Geddy), no Rush. I'm glad for that even though I'm sorry never to see them in concert again.

How very cruel. My thoughts are for his family and fellow band members.
Very tough. Glioblastoma has a very low survival rate, in the low single digits past a few years.
I believe he had a younger child, and much tragedy was visited on him throughout his life. Teen daughter died in a car accident; wife died young.

Neal, was a great drummer. I do not know Rush, while i knew almost anything about artist, bands. I understand he was a kind of Jimmy Hendriks, but than on drums.
Undoubtedly in the pantheon of great drummers, and some believe the greatest of them all.
There are a few documentaries about Rush which are really good. As a band and musicians, they refused to compromise, and they put it all on the line with their breakthrough album 2112. Really interesting backstory.

They definitely got some radio play on some of their songs, I'm sure you've heard
Tom Sawyer (most popular) Limelight Free Will Spirit of Radio Subdivisions 2112 And very many other less well-known but exceptionally good songs. They were very prolific. A thinking man's band, but also with compelling musicianship.

We might be of different generations or geographies.

Rush, love or hate them, can't deny their unique and varied approach. Hard work payed off handsomely for them.
Great summation of the 2112 epic.
Some music from my youth has not lived on, but Rush still does (and they still made excellent albums in the last decade, Snakes and Arrows being my favorite of the recent ones).
My Number One
A strong argument can be made Neil was the most uniquely gifted drummer in Rock Music History. His combined Divinely given talent as a player with a cerebral approach to his instrument along with world class ability as a lyricist. Very rare indeed.

and put things straight, when I say the States, it was actually Canada, my wife pointing out my reference is often viewed an insult to Canadians! It was a memorable trip all said and done.
