The bite of a bull snake can certainly be painful. But not venomous.
Like most animals, they want nothing to do with us, either. But if you step too close and don't see them, they strike.
I do think he was hunting some birds and or eggs. First time I saw one climb a pine like that.

Visited a project yesterday afternoon. About to leave, and the driveway was blocked. Watched this bull, about 5.5' long, slither across and go up the tree. When I left, he was about 25' up there. Photos in reverse order... for Nico, of course!! ;-) ...

But at first I was really confused as I couldn't comprehend just how a bull could get up a tree never mind 25 foot up a tree, so looked more closely at the picture and saw the snake. A Google search then taught me what a bull snake was and it all made sen...
I think it is startling when you first see a snake.
Where I live, they live, and so it is not an uncommon occurrence. But still a startling one. And yet, I see beauty in these creatures.
Well well well.... "bad boys in the back"... I knew you would not listen!!

Like a rattler which confused me (I’ve never seen one climb a tree). It’s a python of some sort right?
Just a large bull snake. Here is a rattler from a few years ago...
And a very beastly one. Full grown, prairie rattler, about 3' long. This one I did not get near! And the scary part... look how he blends. Very difficult to spot before it is too late. ...

Just down the road from me. I should have grabbed it before someone else. Easy to Tan and a lot of nice watch straps right there. ...
I meant to reply to your turkey posts. We see a lot of those too.
Fun to see these animals in the wild.
I had not seen a bull, or rattler, do this either.
One thing is for sure, I am done weeding below the pine trees without fully inspecting them first!!
There seems to be some consensus here. I am guessing you and M4 don't want me to launch a Snake Saturday or Snake Sunday...
