It depends on his style. Assuming exactly the same tapper and diameter, a runner will go for maple. Much better control. A power breaker will go for purple heart. It just slams the ball. A person that just shoots long shots all day long...ebony. There is no flex. Rolls the cue well, but harder to control position. The wood equivalent of carbon fiber but with too heavy a shaft. Probably shoots more accurately.

I know it's always a matter of personal preferences. Super soft tips to me is like boxing gloves on a ninja assasin.
