A White Van Man Gives Up His Ride, Part 12

OK, it's time. My rental contract specifies that I will take the little White Van back to the rental company.

It's pretty much cleaned up and ready to go home.

As I am driving back, I can't help but notice there seem to be a lot of small White Vans roaming the city. This kind of vehicle did not exist 5 years ago in the US, but have recently come into the market in droves, first Ford, then other brands. I've thought about getting one myself, but the various choices are baffling and the price and performance range is pretty wide. The van below is a Nissan NV200.

As I drove along, I remembered being a White Van Man once, long long ago in a far far away land (in case you think I'm making this up, here are photos).

High in the Swiss Aps, near little town called Haslital, up where it snows in July! The van is a Citroen Acadiane, circa early 1980's.

We were extremely laden with goods supplied by our French pals who also loaned us the van.

So well laden we could barely get up the Alps, even with our massive 35 hp motor. A little detective work helped us realize a front brake caliper was dragging too.

So with some rumination on this trip from about 1991 (25 years ago) I began to understand the deeply-rooted affection I was feeling for my little City Promaster. But it had to go back.

Our 9-day, 624-mile, 24-gallon, 500-photo, 50,000-calorie adventure has come to its end. However, we have approximately 40 more days of White Van rental credit during the rest of our Fiat lease.

Is this the end, or do you think we will do it again?
