A White Van Man Finds Rams in the Wilderness, Part 3
Apr 07, 2016,20:57 PM
We left today on the next leg of our vacation close to home. As hard-working white van men always do, we raced out before dawn, in the rain.
We brought along a small icon, the Archangel Michael, as our guardian for the dangerous journey to the wilds of the Anza Borrego Desert.
Soon we found ourselves in commuter traffic, following a chubby lady on a radical trike. Another day in Paradise - Southern California.
I realized we were driving a RAM City Van, so we had to go by RAM'S HILL country club and say hello. We looked in the restaurant but they didn't open for breakfast so we carried on.
Coming down the ever-so-steep 10-mile grade into the desert,
my wife, who had been looking intently out the window, shouted "STOP, I see a desert bighorn sheep!" (in Spanish known as Borrego).
I said, "That's impossible! - we've only seen one in 40 years and that was after a whole weekend of looking."
But I stopped, she pointed, and you judge for yourself ...
Not only did she spot one, we saw 4, including a baby.
Sorry the shots are fuzzy but I was at 50x zoom.
We cruised in to Kendall's Cafe for a White Van Man breakfast, and as I waited for my food I perused the condiments selection.
Sorry, I skipped the breakfast meat part so my plate was pretty bland. No wonder the sauces are offered in such profusion!
We fooled around in the desert a bit, trying our best to get stuck and almost succeeding. You DO NOT want to get stuck out here (I can say from experience). Here's a panoramic view of the locale:
We stumbled across a cactus and palm tree nursery in the far northeast corner of town. The cactus stood at attention like soldiers ...
By this time we were exhausted and despite the clouds it was well over 80 degrees F, so we decided to take a nap.
Please come back for part 4, where we meet monsters, crawl around on the ground looking at flowers, and ALMOST buy a holiday home.
