Nature Abhors a Vacuum, and Flat Surfaces
I noticed this when trying to park this morning -- I think Google needs to create a Topographical Map of this parking lot! Tree roots + asphalt paving=danger, especially if you are in a low car, or on a bicycle, and you come zipping in here.

Likewise plain dirt and debris prefer to arrange themselves into trip-you-if-not-paying-attention surfaces.

Then I realized that given still conditions, WATER prefers to be flat and it's only LAND that is bumpy. Or is it the water's fault, running home to "the low" and leaving those furrows behind, that scars the land?

Some creatures (not man) are made for uneven surfaces.

Then the sun came up, I left such philosophical musings behind, and got interested in other things.

Flying overhead, some cormorants.

Delta Bird

Right after the 6:30 am curfew ends!
Land birds hard at work looking for insects and seeds.
Cormorant fishing for breakfast.
Pelican wondering what he has on his schedule today.

Oops, I guess he had to go somewhere.

An odd spot to row...

I notice signs that winter is coming,

there are even some trees dropping brightly colored leaves, atop the tropical bird of paradise bushes. Our area sends mixed seasonal messages!

Long shadows as I start to smell food, is it a restaurant or someone living in the bushes? I can't tell.

It's about 50 degrees. Brrr as a crazy man runs by, bare feet slapping on the concrete as his bare head shines in the sunlight.

A hummingbird foraging for nectar

which literally runs out of bird of paradise flowers.

My eagle-eyed wife spots a hawk watching for some breakfast to move on the ground below.

"On eternal patrol" caption catches my eye and reminds me of my friend Stephen

who found a peaceful resting place on Tuesday.

We watch a slight breeze blow the giant flag out from the pole, and walk towards the car.

Time for breakfast.

A hot cup of tea and a home-made roll for our fish sandwiches.
Thank you for walking with us this morning.
