It is an exclusive mentality that doesn't serve them well in a global market place. I wonder if this has to do with the warranty - Japan warranty in Japanese (one needs to have a residential address in Japan) vs International Warranty in English.
I was given the choice of warranty when purchasing my SBGV247 as I have a residential address in Tokyo. However, the "Japan domestic warranty" means that the watch cannot be send in for servicing through the local agent in my home country. And likewise, the international warranty means that i couldn't send the watch in for servicing in Japan - even though i travel to Japan like 5-6 times a year. Very archaic practice in this day and age.
