Your intuition is correct
The 16570 should fit better on you than the newer larger iteration. Unfortunately wrist comfort won't improve with familiarity. 16570 just fits everyone better, even larger-wristed folk. I ask to wear my wife's 16570 from time to time as its 40mm case fit...
Left handed here. I wear my watch on my left wrist. And sometimes, but very rarely, on my right wrist, too. Size is not really a problem for a 7'' wrist. I can wear 32 mm to 47 mm watches.
Now, as for the Explorer II, I much prefer the former version, the 16570. I find it more harmonious in size and design. But it is just my taste. Best, Nicolas
