Rolex patina bubbles

Hi there,

The watch on the photos is a Rolex Datejust that we bought million years ago (1991) so it is now approx 30 years old.

This watch is amazing, it has been serviced exactly 1 time when a spring had broken. Other than that it has lived through skiing, ice skating, swimming, golf, flying, flying jets at 9 g, etc. It has fallen down on the ground hundreds of times, sometimes on carpet sometimes on hard concrete.

And despite all that it simply keeps on ticking never lets me down. Plus its pretty accurate as well, offer by few seconds a day.

The only damage is that scratch right on the bevel of the dial glass cover. But its not cracked and is still full waterproof.

Thirty years ago many looked down at Rolex, but show me another brand (I know there are many other brands that will endure same suffering and keep on ticking but it was more as matter of speech) that is that strong.

The bracelet obviously has some scratches and it could use a proper cleaning.

The dial developed a beautiful patina. But when I took these few close up photos I noticed for first time that the dial has 2 different versions of patina.

In upper right hand corner, typical discoloration and fading. I like it it adds character.

But in lower left corner (6-9) there are some bubbles on the dial. Never saw them before (which doesn’t mean they weren’t there I just never paid attention) nor have I seen them on another watch.

I have no idea if this is good or bad. It could be normal wear and tear. Or perhaps it is not so waterproof anymore as I thought it is.

What are your views??

That looks like a heat or moisture issue to me...

Maybe check waterproofness again. The waterproofness of any watch, including a Rolex Oyster, can degrade over time.

This review is a standout

I agree with Nicolas,

Apparently your dial has somewhat reacted to moisture that entered between it and the glass at some stage. I would get it checked by a good watchmaker if any of that is still in the case and for waterproofness, although it shouldn't be the case as long as...

If possible I would like to keep the dial. It has so much character but especially history thanks

You have a point.
