Rolex 8171 “Padellone”
My newest pickup, a Rolex 8171 “Padellone”. In my view, midcentury complicated Rolex - and particularly, the triple calendars - are among the most gorgeous watches in existence. It’s always been a dream of mine to buy either a 8171 or 6062. The 8171, once it was on my wrist, elicited such an emotional response that I just HAD to have it. And the condition of this example is nothing short of stellar.
It is a bit of an odd reference - it is Rolex trying to be Patek - but there is no doubting its immense charm. The lovely Stern Cadrans dial, with smiling moon, voluptuous Favre-Perret case, the stretch rivet bracelet, and Rolex-made automatic movement - it all comes together in a way that few watches do.

Condition of this one is top notch!
Hallmarks present, serial and coronet on back, and lugs are exceptionally full. Dial has a little patina but I think it adds a nice warmth. Thanks for the kind words!

But alas, I wonder whether it would be executed properly. Still, it would be nice to see the crown branch back into a triple calendar watch.

For a brief moment in time, Rolex contemplated whether it should imitate Patek. This is such an interesting reference given what Rolex has become.
