Rolex: All things to All men

Thanks, Bill.

It is interesting to see that the advertisements captured online are different from the print adverts of my youth.

Before the InterWeb, adverts were very specific for location and demographic. I lived in Asia then. Local ads were different from those on the back cover of imported magazines like Readers Digest, TIME and NewsWeek.

80% off the time, we did not know the "famous" people used by Rolex; although they were experts in their field, they were not universally known by the general public e.g. Who was Wally Herbert?

Leaving aside the universally famous like James Bond, Elvis Presley and Steve McQueen, the adverts that resonated were the ones with 'Aspirational' theme: "If you......"

They let the reader answer the question: "Why?"
