I agree with the forum sentiment

I also suspect that this watch is not legitimate. I am not aware of that combination of lettering in the 6239’s and at a cursory glance, the case diameter appears identical to the companion 116520 in the photo, ie it does not appear to be 36.5mm. As far as your original question, I’d tell my friend that any watch of this importance should be assessed by an authorized watchmaker. If one is not currently available, particularly with coronavirus restrictions in place, I’d suggest that my friend approach the seller to reverse the transaction until that inspection is done. For disclosure, I am certainly no Daytona expert—I don’t own either a 116520 nor 6239. I do have experience owning some of the other Daytona references though, and this one gives off a bad vibe.

So a very good customer of mine, who became a friend due to our passion for watches, bought a Daytona that he called a “Paul Newman”. I don’t consider myself being an expert in vintage Rolex but would still expect him to at least give me a call or text me...

Here's a 6239 with similar pushers...

At best it is a franken-watch, at worst an all out fake.

Dial. Bezel. Pushers. Location of pushers (could indicate wrong movement) The seller let it fo for 1/3 of market value. But judging a watch without seeing it in person is risky business.

I know. This is what stood out to me too.

Especially super red “Daytona” as if it was a brand new watch... Now question is how to break it to the friend...
