I've sold few watches.
For me there are 2 types of "regrets".
The easy one: Watches I sold for market price at the time (or less

Finding good examples of vintage these days is just impossible (or ridiculous amount, but with all the Frankenstein watches, even if I'd like to spend, I won't trust the genuinity of the watch),
The number one regret is an unpolished, untouched, in genuine original condition, full set/provenance 1675 Tiffany dial in NOS condition from its 1st owner.
But then, I recall why I sold them, they were too precious in condition to wear (I do wear my watches).

There are maybe 10 watches I regret having parted with, in my whole life. Most of those I parted with, no, because as you said, it was a step in my journey.
Among the ten I let go, I tried to buy them again. Example: The Rolex Yacht Master. Some I cannot, because they went too high in price. Painful... Best, Nicolas

Only one did I regret
I sold an Explorer 1 and I rebought it. Still I wish I had kept the original one as it had a meaning to me i underestimated.
One is better than two, and so on...
Glad you got it back, even if not that exact one. Underestimated meaning is a tricky thing to deal with; this is something I experience at times as well.
I had a few, but the one I really regret is the Saltarello.
Most others I bought back but slowly they left again… Similar to getting back with an Ex, never works )) ...
