Finally found my vintage Rolex

For years I have toyed with the idea of finding a vintage Rolex. However, this was easier said than done.

First, as I am far from a Rolex expert, I found the models and variations confusing. I wanted a nice collectors piece, but did not care about the variation minutia. Eventually I decided that a Red Submariner would fit the bill. It is unique and collectible enough to be interesting, but within a budget that I could stomach.

Next, there are so many fakes and other things to consider. This knocked out most examples on the market because I was unwilling to buy one unless it was from a very trusted source and endorsed by the experts I am lucky enough to know.

And last, the most difficut - I wanted a "well-aged" example. My ideal vintage Rolex has patina and imperfections without appearing to be abused. This is a very fine line. When the elements come together there is a very romantic effect. I knew I would know it when I saw it, but to find an example that lived under the exact right conditions for the last 40 years was seemingly an impossible task.

Until Friday...

On Friday a good friend of mine featured a gorgeous Red Sub on his blog. The subject of his post what the beauty of patina and unrestored vintage pieces. I saw the picture and knew I had found my watch (picture from blog):

I immediately called the seller and bought it. Thankfully he sent it for Saturday delivery so I did not have to lose sleep over the weekend. Well, it arrived yesterday and it is everything I had hoped for.

The case shows some very old scratches but is in excellent condition. The bezel is nicely faded, a bit scratched up, but in a very endearing way. And the dial! The markers and hands are the most gorgeous tan I have seen and yet are in excellent condition. This is a watch that needs to be seen in person. It shows wisdom gained over the last four decades that cannot be quantified or described.

I'm waiting for a few NATO's that I think will work better than the gray it came with, so for now I have it on a nice heavy oyster bracelet. Hope you enjoy!
