For older pieces, there are many references online, especially for Rolex and Tudor that will date the year of manufacturing (approx. but overall fairly accurately) based on the serial number. Since 2002 Rolex and Tudor have gone with random serial numbers...

It was in the back, so either saving it for the "right customer" or it was truly a fresh delivery.
