I have a few thoughts on this debate. First, it’s interesting that the Air King actually has the case more suited to “exploring” as it is antimagnetic and the Explorer is not. Second, we often reference the Explorer’s design as classic Rolex(which it is) for a justification of why we might prefer it, yet variants of other iconic watches such as the green sub or meteorite GMT are not classic Rolex either but still revered. I understand that some probably mean that to say that the busy nature of the AK dial is too much for their liking, but I think that argument is different (if only subtly) from preferring a “classic,” which, in this discussion, I interpret as meaning consistent with the appearance of prior models.
AK’s funky dial aside, I think it’s baggage has a lot to do with its own lineage as an entry level model. I’ve heard a lot of people argue that they’ve “been there, done that” with air kings since they’ve owned one in the past. However, current air king has very little to do with its predecessor and arguably could have been better served by adding it to the Milgauss line instead.
Thanks,
Brian
