Movie post but photo-related...

TCM ran a bunch of Kurasawa movies a while ago. He is a very famous director but I've never really seen any of them.
I didn't want to start with the Samurai stuff so I thought I'd ease in with a '63 film set in contemporary Japan.
The title was 'High and Low,' a police procedural about a kidnapped boy. Very interesting from a moral standpoint.
What really interested me was how it was shot. It was black and white, but the tones were very rich and everything was detailed. Blacks were black and whites were white. There was nothing washed out. It was quite striking and resembled a very well-printed photo a la Ansel Adams.
The phone capture below doesn't do justice to the picture on my (admittedly old) plasma TV.
As an aside, my Japanese isn't great but I can usually pick up a few things. They spoke soooo fast I maybe got ten words in the entire movie : )
Now on to the longer movies set in an earlier time...
