Great find! I was very aware of where everyone was standing...

...maybe that means Kurasawa did a good job. The scenes in the apartment reminded me very much of a stage set...these parts would have been perfect in a play.
The actor who played the lead inspector was fantastic. He seemed very 'American' at times. He would have fit in perfectly in any Bogart film noir. Nobody is as famous as Mifune, but I hope the inspector was recognized as a great actor too.
Maybe I should start a movie thread : )

TCM ran a bunch of Kurasawa movies a while ago. He is a very famous director but I've never really seen any of them. I didn't want to start with the Samurai stuff so I thought I'd ease in with a '63 film set in contemporary Japan. The title was 'High and ...

...better-known films. I love my plasma, and even though it's fifteen years old the color is still beautiful. It's even better when watching a movie...very cinema-like if that's a thing. When it does die I will go with OLED (not a fan of LCD), or if I can...

What an excellent movie! I am very happy that you enjoyed it. To my tastes, it is a very special and superbly crafted film. I hope to be able to see it on a big screen, projected in a proper movie theater someday.

Never seen any of Kurosawa's films, and I . . .

. . . consider myself a film buff. What I can say is that '63 was a good year for cultural exchanges . . . . . . between East and West. ;-)

When I watched the trailer my first thought was that the blocking was excellent, then I found the following clip...

and there is a fair amount of crossover with still photography, including lighting. When I lived in LA we use to go to the movies every week, very infrequently now... Casey

Yes, the lighting is beautiful...Have you watched the film recently?

I made a comment to another Japanese speaker (whom you know) that the actors spoke incredibly fast, especially Mifune. Was that just the cinema style at the time (i.e. film noir-like rapid-fire dialog)? I could only understand ten words : )

I have not seen the full movie, just scenes and commentary...
