I also like 3940. I have an eyesight of an oldish man and still the watch is totally readable. I have visited the Salon and several AD probably 20 times and can't help but in my eyes 5140 is messy and the text too big. But that's just a matter of taste. A...

I had the same ambivalent feelings towards the yellow gold / platinum / white gold color combinations, so I went with a 3940P, then a 5040J. Hehe!

My 2nd choice was 3940P. However, I wanted the classic feature of Grand Complication: exhibition back plus a separate solid back. I could not find a 3940P with that feature even I have heard rumors that such would exist. Best, Kari

I get my viewing pleasure from my 5040J, which does have both backs. Of course my issue now is that a 3970J is whispering to me... Eek. I think I will need to save for a few years though.

I agree with your thoughts, the 3940 is a lot more easier GC to read then the 5140. And the R/G is a beautifully warm colour. And the 5726 makes a nice companion for the 3940R

What I really enjoy is the process towards the acquisition(s). I had a good time when trying to discover the "perfect" perpetual and finally with the money reserved for 5140P, I got the perpetual plus the AC. Best, Kari

There is no argument between us: the blue dial is Cooler! This time my reasoning went in such a way that the reference is so classic that perhaps the fancy dial is too much. Furthermore, I have not been able to decide if I would love it after the first ho... 

What a nice companion it would be for your other blue dialed Patek, you know, the one we have in common. As for the nice spring in Paris, well let's say that we have an exceptional warmth wave. 2 Degrees Celsius... Best, Nicolas

My 5110P is with me to stay even I'm getting another blue 5131G. Then there's my 3712 and WG Golden Ellipse. Indeed, white and blue is a great combination - just like the Finnish flag. Tallinn is much colder than Paris - we have +1. Best, Kari

All 240 based movements with blue dials plus 5070P plus 5100G... It is awful how there are new temptations around all the time. And I just want to see the time - or... Best, Kari

But I already own the 5070G, so yes, for you, a 5070P would be very interesting... Now, I still have two modern targets: 5960P and 5100G... To close my Patek collection. And a 3417 for the good note, in the vintage world. Best, Nicolas

My 3940G says hello! I had the 3940j, then the 5140G and finally this 3940G, therefore I can honestly say 3940 is my cup of tea! :) I agree with you 5140 though 1 mm bigger, the dial looked too cluttered to me, exactly what you've described it to be. But...  

and I must admit that WG looks really great. I had many reasons to go for RG this time. I do not have a large Patek "collection" but I want to see at least one example from each product family (Calatrava, Golden Ellipse, Gondolo, Nautilus, Aquanaut, Compl... 

even if it doesn't come with a see through back. The hard back actually makes it look and wear slimmer! Your collection policy is superb, each category of complication has its iconic piece. I wish I could have the resource to do the same. Post more pix so... 

solid back feels slimmer and that's the reason for two backs. But for sure I could live with greatest of pleasure with a 3940P. More pictures... Here my 3940R looks a bit more reddish. DIV Best, Kari ...

And I even got the earlier series (early 1990s) so I didn't have the deployant clasp. But it's easy enough to get a deployant clasp separately. The display back, not so easy. So, I turn to my 5040J for the display back! Heh heh.

That's why I went for the 3940P after months of research! I am on the hunt again for a different Patek animal. I will post pics when I acquire the piece. I think it is in the same "classic" lines as the 3940. Let's see what you think!

With the added bonus of that retrograding feature for the calendar - that is pretty sweet. Had a chance to pick up a 5059 recently too with an officer's case but I had to "keep my eye on the prize." I will keep that a small secret for now, but soon, Mech ... 

i am a big fan of RG.

... I have the opportunity to get a 5136/1J, a perpetual on a bracelet. My issue is exactly this - that the proportion of the letterings now follows the 5140's relative size/format. But I prefer the 3940's! Heh heh. I have a 5040J, but I think the relativ... 

3940. Yes, 5140 is 1.2 mm bigger and €,€€€.$$ more expensive. Just calculate how much that's per one meter. And what do you get? A bit bigger case and a bit messy dial. Best, Kari

I wouldn't go with a brand new 5140, that's for sure. I do like how my 5040J complements my 3940P: So the letters and numerals are about the same size/shape as the 5140, but the tonneau shape makes it work somehow (at least for me). Sorry for the bad pict...  

and I found many. However, nome in NOS condition and complete. I love especially the version With Breguet numerals and either J or G would do well for me. Best, Kari

The 5040J that I found was pre-owned but in mint/unpolished condition, had open papers AND an extract from the archive, complete with winding box, stylus, etc. I actually got it within a week of my 3940P haha. So I've been letting my wallet recover for a ... 

preferably unpolished. Even all my Pateks have a Certificate of Origin, I'm ordering the Extracts of Archives to all over 5 years old watches - even if I bought the same brand new from the AD. One day I'll find a perfect 5040. Best, Kari

... that it retails for such a high price (here in the US, at least) of $109,000 via ADs. For that price you can find, with some effort, a third series 3970J (with solid and display backs) or even a second series 3970J (a bit more rare and supposedly more... 

The new version of 3940, I mean 5140, is remarkably more expensive than what 3940 was. What did we get more: same movement but 1.2 mm bigger size and a messier dial. Best, Kari

I have fooled with similar ideas! It would be a cool idea to have my pet perpetual in three colors like I have my favorite dress watch VC Patrimony Contemporaine. But such an idea is probably too expensive to make true. Best, Kari

Looks great, something pure and simple and that watch. Rose gold is a good choice, nice and warm. Strangely i love it in Rg, and i'm indifferent to the Wg one. I got to admit that i got a weakness for the 5140P. You have a nice collection of Patek with 24...
