While it is stating the obvious to say that you can’t go wrong with either watch and I certainly don’t think one is better than the other, for me
they are very different watches with a different type of appeal. A while back I had both 3970 and 5970. It seemed that once I acquired the 5970, I pretty much stopped wearing the 3970, in favor of wearing the 5970. I wondered why that was. Clearly the 3970 has the DNA of the legendary 2499, a watch many regard as the greatest watch ever made by Patek, plus the 3970 is beautiful in its own right. So why?
For me (in my totally subjective biased view): the 5970 seems more sporty, more substantial size wise, I love the tachometer track. The dial seems very balanced despite the complexity. It just “pops”. Figuratively, almost takes my breath away when I put it on. A perfect watch and for me perhaps Patek’s greatest watch of the modern era (again only my subjective viewpoint).
On the hand the 3970 is extremely elegant, beautiful, refined and complex but uncluttered in its dial layout. And definitely “2499 ish”. I love the style of the case - unsurpassed.
I really like what Miranda wrote … if only the 3970 were a bit larger (say 38-40mm). At that size it would easily accommodate a tachometer track and my preference might be totally in favor of the “new 3970”. Since perhaps my favorite all time Patek is the 2499, I would find it almost impossible to resist this watch.
Anyway, everything I wrote above is totally subjective and reflects my personal preference … 5970.
But like I said you can’t go wrong with either watch. They are both iconic and fabulous! Hope to see an image one day of your 5970 or 3970 on your wrist!
Happy New Year and best regards,
