I found a preowned 5496P but it does not include a platinum case back. My understanding is that it should have one. Is this correct? How would that impact the value of the watch? ...
Yep, the set should include a solid platinum case back.
Since it’s not a full set, this will certainly have a negative impact on the price once you should decide to sell it. To quantify this negative impact is very difficult though. Best, Volker

The watch came originally with two case backs.
It is good to know that Patek will not produce a replacement. Naturally, the missing case back does not influence to the wearing pleasure of the watch. But in case you want to sell the watch one day, the missing part can reduce the resale price of the wat...
But they do not make new case backs.

If you really love this Patek, go for it. However without the full set it will greatly impact the resale value if you decide to sell it one day
Worse come to worst is when you decide to let it go one day, it will take a long time to sell cause this is not cheap and the buyer may prefer the whole set. Best regards, Baxter
