I found a preowned 5496P but it does not include a platinum case back. My understanding is that it should have one. Is this correct? How would that impact the value of the watch? ...  

Since it’s not a full set, this will certainly have a negative impact on the price once you should decide to sell it. To quantify this negative impact is very difficult though. Best, Volker

It is good to know that Patek will not produce a replacement. Naturally, the missing case back does not influence to the wearing pleasure of the watch. But in case you want to sell the watch one day, the missing part can reduce the resale price of the wat...

Worse come to worst is when you decide to let it go one day, it will take a long time to sell cause this is not cheap and the buyer may prefer the whole set. Best regards, Baxter

I would think the lack of the extra back would impact more on this reference than normally. For some reason Patek collectors cannot get their hearts into this movement no matter how it is cased up. Retrograde dates are popular on other brands, I have neve... 

Buying it without a solid caseback would not be a concern to me as I do not see the point of having one. Personal experience is this additional caseback just is stored somewhere anyway... However I would ensure the price was adjusted accordingly as it no ... 

It may be great buying opportunity though, if you can negotiate a solid discount on it.
