The question of provenance is always a difficult one. Personally I would do some research and then go with your gut feeling.

I'm afraid the best way in these situations is to try and confirm things independently, to the extent it's possible. There's no way Patek (or the Salon) would officially disclose this information, assuming they are aware of it.
He's known as a collector, but if an extra "Eric Clapton" on the certificate comes at a significant premium and has value to you, frankly I'd be very careful unless you can verify he really owned that specific watch... Don't forget that you and I could bu...
