Platinum has a higher tensile strength than gold..
...but is still soft. So gold, with it's softness and lower tensile strength will both scratch and wear easily. But platinum -- soft but with higher tensile strength -- will wear differently. When you scratch platinum, the scratch isn't normally produced by removing metal, it's generally due to the metal being pushed into the surface -- like a dent. Since it doesn't wear easily, it holds its edges much better than gold. When polishing metals, you're actually removing some of the metal. This is easy to do with gold because of the lower tensile strength. It's much harder to do with platinum because of its higher tensile strength.

I don’t how I did that but I scratched my 5056p buckle. I did not even hit anything with it but as I wore it with short sleeves I probably did that by leaving my arm on the desk or something. Anyway I am sad...!! Kev ...

Perfectly explained too! Considering pretty much 99.99% of watches here are SS, gold, or PT, I am surprised most of us know so little about their individual characteristics (myself included, obviously!!)

I'll just say that from a mineralogy viewpoint, a Mohs scale hardness of 3.5 or 4 is not considered hard, although you are of course correct, platinum is harder than gold...

I guess all precious metals are softer than steel.
Can feel the pain of scratching the watch. But it is still better than just keeping the watch in the vault. The only thing we can do is to be as careful as possible, and avoiding some high risk actions. Best, Henry
