Patek Philippe 5905/1A - 001 and missing out on John Mayer
This is my lovely 5905 joining with me at work today. When the dial catches the light at the correct angle, it is absolutely stunning. That said, most of the time, especially indoors the colour is duller than in this photo. At least that is my experience after having this reference for a reasonable time. But it helps to keep the watch under the radar. Speaking of going under the radar, the 5905 is not a small watch in my view. One can keep it under the cuff but it may seek the sunlight every now and then without you realising the dial is out in the open š.
I have a bittersweet story with this watch. When I received this lat year, I had also expressed an interest in the Daytona 116508 solid gold/ green dial aka John Mayer. I am a bit reserved about sold gold (E and J) bracelets in general for the simple reason they reflect a lot of light drawing undue attention. I wear every watch I own therefore, a full gold bracelet watch, I feared may end up in my storage. The exception I was going to make, of course is the 116508 green. I absolutely love the dial colour, long before the John Mayerās interview with Ben Clymer.
Sadly for me, my AD received both the 5905/1A and the 116508 at the same time. I was asked to make a choice (rightly so I must accept) because they have to be fair to all clients. I made the decision to go with 5905 and the rest is history⦠I was fairly certain that Rolex was likely to discontinue the anniversary 116508 as the next big anniversary of the Daytona was coming up in 2023. And so it proved.
Do I regret missing out on the John Mayer Daytona?? The honest answer is sometimes I do. But then I look at my 5905/1A and think I made the right decisionā¦
