This fountain pen collector in Singapore had a Jaeger-LeCoultre, a brand that I was aspiring to own a Reverso piece, so he had my attention. And he introduced me to the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5000. Just from his photos, I immediately identified that the 5000 had much shinier edges of the plates than JLC - I didn't know it was called "anglage" at the time. I liked this polished bullnose edge. I didn't know that Patek Philippe was a higher heirarchy than Jaeger-LeCoultre. I had heard of the brand, but didn't know its top billing status. Back 20 years ago, most of the catalogue at Patek Philippe had a lot of the hobnail patterns were too "old" for me, so half the menu didn't appeal to me. I liked the idea of an automatic with a micro rotor, and this was my first introduction to micro rotor automatics. So early on, I decided, if I were to get a Patek Philippe, I'd want a 240 caliber, to get the micro rotor, I wanted small seconds (I found this more elegant), and for practicality, I wanted the date. Then Patek Philippe made the 6000, with its strange dial, and I actually liked it - the 6000 even came on a deployant clasp. So I was debating buying either a Reverso or a 6000. Somehow I ended up with a different Patek Philippe timepiece as my first watch. While I was fiercely set on making a Reverso my first watch, I have to admit, I was influenced by a few individuals along the way including the four founders of this website and Dr. No. None of them were movie stars. JLC's wonderful catalogue that introduced its employees and the various departments was very well done. Patek Philippe's brochure didn't have such nice descriptions, just pictures of the watches and technical descriptions. I sometimes wish that these rappers would stop promoting Patek Philippe, as I find the rappers (more than the movie stars) bring watches to the forefront attention of a criminal audience, more than the movie stars. And then these criminals get the big ideas of robbing people for their watches. This isn't a fair argument to the rappers though, as it can be argued that thieves for the past 50 years (before rappers rapped about watches in their lyrics) criminals have asked victims to give them their watches and jewelry in a stick up. But the rappers definitely aren't helping! So now, I wear a less expensive low profile Reverso. It makes me happy. And I feel a little safer.
