Patek Philippe

I've never really understood the concept of the certificate of origin

Hi,

I've never really understood the concept of the certificate of origin, at least in the way it is done by Patek Philippe, as a way of insuring any certainty at the time of sale.

You can get a certificate of origin without sending the watch to Patek Philippe (please correct me if I'm wrong).so what can stop someone to ask a certificate without actually owning the watch? AFAIK you just need to give the case and calibre number.

A certificate of origin is IMO interesting for an owner to know more about his own watch, but I don't think it can be really used as a proof of originality of a watch for sale.

Cheers

Dje
