Here is something you might want to try.
Take a piece of steel wire that is the same diameter as the hole for the screw.
Turn the end down in the lathe till it is about 3/4 the size of threaded part remaining.
And dress the tip with even cuts so it is jagged. (gives the wire a little bite, to grab the remaining threaded part).
Temper the steel to a straw color after it is shaped. (harden it)
Holding the wire in the lathe, and turning by hand in a counter clockwise direction( try to unscrew the remaining piece)
Warning do not burnish the top of the remaining piece. As this will only make it harder to remove if this does not work.( But if it does not work, this is not the end. more things you can try)
