Don't know how nor when it happened, but I have been keen lately on a Patek 5396, please talk me out of it....
At first I was eye balling the 5396R-015 with its stunning blue dial and diamond markers. Recently I grew fond of the 5396/1R with its lovely brown dial rose gold bracelet combo. Both can be bought cheaper then a Nautilus 5711 and both are so true Patek DNA with a lovely annual calendar. But the question remains...do I need it? Stupid question I know. So please talk me out of it.

That is one HONEY of a watch!
I though seriously about getting one a while back. My biggest hesitation was that I truly wanted a Perpetual Calendar, so I held out for the 5320g. What you are looking at is such a fine , classically styled watch. You won’t go wrong!
Does anybody need a watch these days?

I would pick that 1R any day over the 5711 (very overrated especially at today’s ridiculous premium). Happy shopping.

Hi Maltie, given your 5205 blue dial (love at first sight), I can talk you out of the 5396...
blue dial due to the repeat color, but I must talk you into the 5396 brown dial with R bracelet, which is a perfect match ! So warm looking !
You are right, I got too many blue dials already but not a single brown one
If I pull the trigger it will be the brown one anyway. Love the combo with the full rose gold.

Would be the 5140R... looks superb in this very iteration but not on a bracelet of course...
I have been looking in the past at the 5140 but all these sub dials make it too busy and difficult to read. My 2c.
And my eye sight is not getting better at my age 😉

i like the watch, however it really bothers me that the hands permanently obscure the view on the 24 on the sub dial. Seems strange but that makes it for me a no go. Did I succeed 😀? Dirk

You are absolutely right. If we can't distinguish day from night anymore there is more wrong than your watch 😉 For now my heart beats faster for the R.
Funny how many are bothered about the 24h dial
It bothers me too, because I find it redundant. I know it assists setting but at the same time it is displaying time too. But something were of a minor issue. My choice: clearly the R! A very cool, unusual watch that will match to the colour of a whisky ....

I assume you don't want to be talked out of it but if you do...
This Patek is not iconic, and will be a loser in resale. It is not a true collector's item (currently) and it has no history of being more desirable than a woman's 24.... (give or take.) It is 'just another Patek especially these days in super soft market...
No Nautilus please, soon everybody will be wearing Nautilus 😉
I prefer to benefit from the soft market and once that crazy hype is over people will appreciate the classics again.

It's a want. LOL. Beautiful watch for sure. If you love it and have the means, go for it.
