I may be mistaken, and I'm no expert or fan of the Patek deployant, but I think that the Calatrava style deployant has been around the longest. The Stern style deployant seems to have been introduced more recently but may not have been as well recieved and the old style was reinstated. Alternatively I have heard some suggest that the type of deployant provided is specific to the particular Patek model and that both are available.
The stern type deployant looks like the closing latch on the wooden patek box and may have been introduced a around the same time as the change in box style. The older style large square boxes i remember had a reddish color wood with a smaller and more simple looking latching mechanism. The later style boxes had a darker brown wood and the larger stern style closing latch.

I spent a "fortune" on them in the past, but today I prefer a buckle most of the time. Not only because of the understatement. At the end it is just a matter of taste and habit. Oliver
I put all my watches on a pin buckle,
even the 5070 or the Daytona 116518, for both safety and comfort reasons. It is much more comfortable for smaller wrists. Original pin buckles do not come cheap, though... Cheers, R

There is a newer style deployant that features a Stern buckle rather than the Calatrava cross within a circle. It's really much more discreet in appearance.

The ADs that I visited only have the cross style deployant on their watches. My 5146 is 3 month old and it came with the Calatrava Cross deployant.

Patrick nailed it, that's the one I was referencing. A completely different look from the Calatrava cross but functionally similar. Don't know if there's a price difference but I would think not significant if any.
