2 vs 1

 By: Robert65 : July 19th, 2020-09:53
Running into a challenge and I would love to get the input of Patek afficianados. Posting in the Patek forum because Patek enthusiasts nearly universally respect Lange and Journe. I certainly do! I am planning to save enough resources for (what I would li...

Interesting dilemma ! IMO, it depends on whether you want a Patek ...

to round out your collection or not. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

thanks GLau!

It will be quite a while before I make a decision but until that time I'll enjoy the luscious anticipation! Best, Robert

Good advice Nico!

I was thinking that since Patek owners also appreciated Journe and Lange - that they would be able to speak from experience. But of course your advice is correct and appreciated! Best, Robert

Wise words

My pleasure. [nt]

Thank you so much!

Monopole, not only do I appreciate your valued advice but I'd like to share with you that your screen name "Monopole" just happens to be the name of my favorite college drinking bar at my small school in Plattsburgh, New York (up near Montreal, Canada). I...

Thanks Robert! Monopole is an ID I probably cannot get elsewhere, like Instagram 😃. Glad it reminded you of fond memories.

Continue your hunt and deliberations, thats where the fun and agony of this hobby is. For me, I pretty much concluded there’s no concept of “exit” watch in the literal sense. Apart from those precious pieces we set aside for our kids/heirloom, what we wil...

I don't think there's anything wrong with how you phrased this request; actually, the various viewpoints other collectors will offer may come handy as you reach your own, personal decision.

This is also why we are here for each other on this forum ;-) So let me also give you my honest input, which are I guess two different considerations. First, between a 5170 and a good combination of FPJ + ALS, I'd most likely got for the latter. I might n...

FabR, you are an artiste

 By: Robert65 : July 19th, 2020-10:40
Your learned input is very helpful. I've often thought about having an example from each of these houses for variety sake. There's certainly strength in that choice. If I may inquire, what particular Patek reference would you absolutely NOT stray from in ...

Oh, the one Patek I would pick in a four-watch, Patek+Rolex+FPJ+ALS collection? This is a really tough one!😎

 By: FabR : July 19th, 2020-12:42
It also depends on whether the Patek comes before the other three and the rest are built around it, etc.. But in a similar budget window, since you already have a 5712 which is an excellent choice, I may not leave it so easily. A chrono (e.g. a 5960 or 5x...

Your dilemma spans more than horological pursuits.

It’s called substitution economics and it exists in every purchase. And is natural. I personally want, many things in life. But when money is in hand I start to go “ wait. I could have X or Y,Z and Q!” I agree with others that while you save your money, d...

Substitution Economics!

 By: Robert65 : July 19th, 2020-12:19
You nailed the psychology and the economics exactly! Thank you so much for explaining and sharing Roger! Best, Robert

Just depends on the strength of your love for the 5170.

 By: vitalsigns : July 19th, 2020-11:16
Personally, I would opt for the FPJ and the ALS, two great pieces and nicely representative of their respective brands. Buy the FPJ first as its price seems to be running hot these days. Be sure you can handle the thickness of the ALS. There is a big diff...

Yes, the German wall was a problem with my dress shirt cuff

 By: Robert65 : July 19th, 2020-12:28
in both the Dato and the 1815. The slab-sided case was straight vertical off my wrist and I continually had to shake my cuff to coax the cuff over the top of the case. Yes, the 1815 Chrono case size is less thick than the Dato, but that straight slab-side...

Both are awesome.

I prefer the look of the Dato. Such a perfectly executed dial. But the black dial rose gold 1815 sure does pop. Tough decisions.

If the 5170 is your optimal goal and the final addition to your collection,

then continue to save your money and hold out for exactly what you want. The two-watch alternative seems a bit of a compromise compared to the watch you really want. What’s fortunate is that you have time to consider your options as you save your money. I...

I would like to congratulate you for having such patience

 By: Brandon Skinner : July 19th, 2020-21:50
2 years waiting and saving would kill me. I really wish I had such patience and determination. In saving for something meaningful I normally get derailed by charming “easy pickups” that feel good in the moment but only push grails further and further away...

Category collector

 By: Weems@8 : July 19th, 2020-22:50
I collect on category also. I have 4 categories, and i have 4 watches which fits in each. The fifth category is open, and enjoying the anticipation is on. This is interesting. Why do you collect what others collect who are active in that Patek Philippe fo...

Robert, first of all, what a great post! Your humble and well presented dilemma presents an interesting problem that has a positive result no matter what your decision.

 By: patekova : July 20th, 2020-09:06
Second, all 5 watches you mention are excellent! I would never presume to suggest what you should do. My approach, solely for me, would be quality over quantity. In this case it is not quality in the usual sense. Certainly, in the standard definition of q...

Which one(s)

 By: KonaJ : July 20th, 2020-15:09
My “Grail” watch seems change as time passes, especially after I wear it for an extended period, so I might be inclined to buy two “almost grail watches.”
