I believe you meant 3940 and not 3970... [nt]

I confess myself...disappointed

 By: Codes : March 25th, 2018-09:16
I’m a bit disappointed by Patek’s Basel releases. They updated their sports and grand complications lines, but did nothing for people looking for innovation outside those lines. As popular as the sports lines are, I don’t think it truly reflects what Pate...

Agree...

Patek will not innovate because Patek does not have to innovate (except at the grand comp level and a few other unattainable (for me) releases). Their position in the market is IMO irrationally strong. This leads to a different set of business decisions t...

Agree with your statement

There’s a true Patek cult (same for Rolex) and they have orders for years so they don’t need to deeply modify their strategy and supply. Evolution rather than revolution. Best wishes Alkiro

Thanks John

Best wishes Alkiro

Patek plays a different game in a different field.

No matter how disappointing some watches might look; surprisingly, every new watch is a success, according to their audience. Prices are simply following their motto (or commercial), just buy now something that will be given to the next generations. The h...

I have to agree...

although Patek have not really innovated for years, if not decades. I guess a brand that has something to prove pushes the boundaries of innovation, but Patek’s following is so strong that if a new metal or dial colour is released, it’s big news! I hope P...

Yes ALS is a good example for what Patek should be doing

 By: Codes : March 25th, 2018-17:50
Seems like ALS has updated the movements in their lower end pieces. Features like hacking seconds, second reset to zero, etc. ALS is driving for more while Patek seems content to mostly rest on their laurels.

Spot on!

One can’t help but admire a brand that takes so much care and thought updating minor details to perfect their product. That strive for excellence and compulsive approach is lacking in Patek, even at times in their “Grand Complication” models. I for one lo...

As of 2017 there were 43 references using the 240 mvmt.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : March 25th, 2018-13:42
Patek is fitting this movement into many cases including the 44mm 6102P celestial. To me this shows a degree of laziness. I know it is a great reliable movement. However if you do not innovate you stagnate and the next great movement will never be invente...

Wondering how long has the 240 base movement been in use...

 By: Greenwatch : March 25th, 2018-20:15
For one, if it is about recovering R&D costs, I think Patek like any other businesses will pursue that action and I am still ok with that, but it should not continue forever. They have to innovate (which they have done with the Regulator) and consider the...

Caliber 240 was first used in 1977 in the Golden Ellipse ref 3738.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : March 25th, 2018-21:24
The movement was developed in the Quartz revolution of the 1970’s to compete with quartz watches. Patek was striving to make a mechanical watch as reliable and accurate as a quartz watch. Ref 3970 houses the 240 movement and was the watch that saved Patek...

I, for one, am very happy with Patek’s new models this year

 By: RussW : March 25th, 2018-15:52
I think their current lineup is stronger than ever.

I second that! [nt]

I agree with you...

My AD carries PP, Rolex and Tudor. I called and discussed about Rolex and Tudor. The AD manager didn’t have much to say about PP as well.

In Patek's defence,

 By: sham1 : March 25th, 2018-20:29
I would just like to say that Patek do innovate but they do things slowly and thoroughly. The 5650 Advanced Research Nautilus was produced last year with an accuracy of +1 -2 seconds. Few mechanical watches can boast of such accuracy but it may take a whi...

The releases this year are populist and will be hugely

 By: Patekphilippecollector : March 25th, 2018-22:08
Popular....I do agree...they need to up their game a bit...a simple thing like daylight saving on WT...all very well spending £425000 on a WT MR that's wrong 50% of the year@@@

Several great new watches for hedge fund managers and a watch with orange hands for the rest of us.

 By: Katzky1 : March 26th, 2018-00:53
Of course the wait list for the new Aquanaut will be a few years deep and likely slow down delivery of the 5167A. Uggh.... I really want a 5167 with an orange seconds hand.

It is an interesting question.....and....

.....I would be really curious how members split on this. For me, I would want to see how opinions varied using a filter. Those who have been collecting Patek for over 5 years and those for under 5 years. That is the survey I would love to see.

PP does innovate but they cannot scale it?

 By: saso : March 26th, 2018-01:49
Just consider the 5235G with its Spiromax balance spring and Pulsomax escapement. But I was indeed surprised that still did not introduce anything new with these components. I guess they still have scalability issues regarding their production.

expectations

 By: keks : March 26th, 2018-13:31
we all have different expectations to mostly everything in life. In this day where most desires are expected to be fulfilled immediately I can certainly see how some find this years novelties less groundbreaking and disappointing. Personally I was slightl...

As said here

Patek does not need to innovate or do anything for that matter. Besides the 240q they stick to the 215ps in spite of the fact it is way too small for all the watches it is in and is a 1960s technology with a short PR and no hacking.

Very true. I wish there would be a day that they come up with a more e modern Calatrava (as I love time only, non sport watches).

It would be nice to show some competition to say an FP Chrono Bleu. Maybe I’m a niche buyer 🤔
