bit old fashioned?

Mar 12, 2013,15:19 PM

Maybe Kari ,  but i'd prefer say classic and timeless style ,

I would add it is the chronograph i prefer so much , but  you know what : i am a little biased
Have you noticed the yellow gold case is very close to some pale rose gold  ?
Many congrats and wear it in the best of health .
Greetings from France .

A KIND OF INSTRUCTIONS

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-08:21
Eiter I have to blame our Moderator small-luxury-world a.k.a. Oliver. He wrote a very good post "Patek Philippe Ref. 5170 - The genesis of a new classic". Thanks to Oliver's post I started to look at 5170J with new eyes and open mind. So now I have a new ...

Exactly!

By: Mark in Paris : March 12th, 2013-08:40
And, to be sure, some may need to have this post translated in local language ;) Thanks for this unusual 5170 stripping, as always I don't see the point when someone just posts a picture of an ugly box (even with a Patek inside). This is clearly a watch o...

Thank you Mark!

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-08:54
Yellow gold is not my #1 choice but this watch is so incredibly classic that YG fits well to that. However, if the coming WG looks much better, I can always trade to that or to do like a top executive of Patek advised me in a cocktail party: "Collect 5170...

True but ...

By: Mark in Paris : March 12th, 2013-09:12
... what if they change the scale into a Tachy. or Telemeter one ? I heard the Puslometer scale could be reserved to YG (maybe internet rumors...). As you said, this YG color is also something that fits very well to the 5170's spirit.

Then I have to start saving money

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-09:20
for the next one. My dream is to see a 5170P with a blue dial and at some stage 5170A. Best, Kari

Maybe in 1 month ! [nt]

By: Mark in Paris : March 12th, 2013-09:27

Thank you for sharing this heady experience with us!

 By: doublesix : March 12th, 2013-08:56
And congrats on your new watch. A sealed watch is just a sealed watch. Ownership does not crystalize until it is on your wrist. Enjoy your 5170 in good health!

Thank you Wilson

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-09:06
Yes, this sealed / double sealed Patek issue is something I really do not understand. I am 100% sure there are better ways to invest money than to sealed watches. At the same time a great watch is much nicer on the wrist than a bunch of blue chip stock. B...

Best Patek...no doubt :)

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : March 12th, 2013-09:10
One of my favorites from current lineage. Marvelous choice on both counts ;) Best D

Thanks!

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-09:18
In my opinion 5170 is full of hidden charm and some time is needed to appreciate the watch in full. Best, Kari

Kari, you made my day!

 By: small-luxury-world : March 12th, 2013-09:42
I love your kind of humour and of course the watch. One more great piece in your already marvelous collection. Congrats! By the way, next beer goes on me :-) Oliver

Be careful Oliver with your beer.

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-09:53
I just came from my wife last night from a weekend trip to Istanbul. My kids were claiming that we travel too much and they stay alone "all the time". Anyhow, I promised to take all the kids for a shopping trip to Germany sometimes during the spring when ...

No reason to be careful ...

 By: small-luxury-world : March 12th, 2013-11:21
if this one is big enough for you: No this is not a Masskrug, this one is for 5 liter :-) Looks like Munich, but you should come to Berlin ... or Basel ... pm sent Oliver ...

That one I have tried in the original environment

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-12:57
I had just two mugs just before Xmas many years ago. Next day I was supposed to drive to Zell am See but I had to stay the whole day in the bottom of my bed waiting for death. This kind of experience helped me to shift to non-alcoholic beer. Best, Kari

I feel Kari's wrist shot deserves . . .

 By: Dr No : March 12th, 2013-10:52
. . . a stint at the Masthead, Oliver. What a magnificent debut he's prepared for us!

Wonderful post, Kari!

By: blomman Mr Blue : March 12th, 2013-10:18
I love your statement: The first real touch of your watch. The relationship starts from here. So true! :) Congrats and wear it in good health! Best Blomman

Tackar!

Mvh, Kari

Absolutely lovely - congratulations!

 By: no_frills : March 12th, 2013-10:28
I've seen the 5170 in person and put it on my wrist as well. It is quite a piece!

Just try to wind it,

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-12:55
then the chrono. And you will be sold! Best, Kari

Can a chrono be more classic than this one?

By: COUNT DE MONET : March 12th, 2013-12:02
You are clearly becoming a serious collector :-). That is a very, very fine chrono. Although I am not really a chrono person: this one tickles my senses a lot! Moritz

Let me make it clear:

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-13:04
I am not a collector! I happen to like Patek Philippe a lot. And I am buying a small amount of watches that fill my needs. What can I do if I need a dress watch, sporting watch, travel watch, time zone watch, tuxedo watch, chronograph, swimming watch (als...

Kari, you are not the kind of guy to put a plastic bag on your wife's face

 By: amanico : March 12th, 2013-12:53
During the wedding day... And you are not the kind of collector to keep a watxh under the plastic seal... Bravo. And enjoy your new Patek! Best, Nicolas

Thanks Nico. Even I don't know if

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-13:06
you want to be polite or nasty. Anyhow, I am not a collector. Just a modest user... Best, Kari

Not polite nor nasty, for once. :)

 By: amanico : March 12th, 2013-13:09
I just love to see someone sharing his joy anf happiness when he gets a new watch. Even more when this someone is a friend. Best, Nicolas

Thank you Nicolas!

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-13:10
We are coming with Darja for the first time to Baselworld. Hope to see you there and have a cup of something together. Best, Kari

Thanks Puffy,

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-13:07
I'm happy if you enjoyed it! Best, Kari

Tried this one recently. Definitely has PP DNA all over it.

 By: watch-guy.com : March 12th, 2013-13:02
Great pick up. Thanks for sharing your experience wit us all. Julian

I agree:

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-13:09
Covered with Patek DNA. That is a very good reason to acquire the watch. Especially for a conservative like I am. Best, Kari

Beautiful watch and its funny I was reading that post...

 By: scurfa : March 12th, 2013-13:11
...last night the photo's are excellent did you have to wait long for your watch?

Thank you Dje,

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-14:03
A great watch but perhaps a bit old fashioned? Best, Kari

bit old fashioned?

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-15:31
Indeed, the color of the case in my eyes is a little bit different than yellow gold is normally. I will pick up from the bank vault my 5120/1 and a Golden Ellipse to see if there's a difference. Best, Kari

Possible

 By: Dje : March 12th, 2013-23:58
Hi Kari, I generally dislike yellow gold, but liked this one a lot! I didn't find it as bright yellow as yellow gold generally is. Maybe it's due to the detailing of the case too? Best Dje

Congratulations Dje,

 By: dr.kol : March 13th, 2013-00:21
7,500 posts is an achievement. Best, Kari

retire this reference

 By: watch-er : March 13th, 2013-08:50
I suspect they retire this reference this year at Basel and and bring out a new model in white gold with a different type scale. I own and love the 5170J but it may take several years before the larger PP community warms up to this reference based upon sa...

congratulations! Nice post...

 By: Fricks : March 12th, 2013-14:10
... keeps our breath away until the next pics :) Great choice, very nice watch, how about the feel of the triggering of the chrono and especially the reset? Sweet as honey? Wear it in good health. Looks great on your wrist!

Thanks Fricks

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-14:23
One should write a poem about operating the chronograph. The feeling is incredible and pressing the resetting button of the chronograph hand feels like putting the finger to warm... I'm not a poet! Best, Kari

its poetry...

 By: Fricks : March 12th, 2013-14:39
... the vintage feel of that watch is amazing. Best of both worlds. This watch is "so Patek" is every way. Now we'll be waiting for more nice good outdoors shots!

Will this do?

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-15:00
I do not know how good the shot is, but it's outdoor. I do not have many shots yet because the watch has been free from plastic for only some 8 hours. Best, Kari ...

Nice...

 By: Fricks : March 12th, 2013-15:08
... 8h only! Thanks for sharing so soon! Ok, now get ready to welcome the Wg version soon :)

Let's see if they will pull off the YG

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-15:25
when the WG comes. For the ladies they have a WG version with blue dial. In case the same happens with gents version, I will start saving. I stopped smoking on 30th January. By now I have saved some € 268.80. I used to smoke two packs a day and there a pa...

keep smoking and boozing...

 By: Fricks : March 12th, 2013-15:44
... if everything goes as it should, after 29 yrs of saving, the price will be such that you might need another 29 yrs... Unless you are a highlander, better keeping on enjoying a smoke and a drink :)

Sorry Fricks but you are wrong!

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-15:52
And clearly you do not either smoke nor booze. We often hear complaints about rising watch prices. But what about the rising prices of cigarettes and booze. When I started smoking 41 years ago, a pack of my favorite brand of cigarettes costed about 4% of ...

actually....

 By: Fricks : March 12th, 2013-17:32
... i smoke a lot and drink a little, but i never kept count. Anyway, doesn't matter, my guess is that 5170G will be stunning. Let's remind each other in April ;)

I am afraid 5170G will be great.

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-22:36
If it is great and very different compared with 5170J, I have to start to save money. If it is just great but very similar to 5170J, I have two alternatives: - to be happy with my 5170J - sell my watch, add a bit cash and get 5170G I love most of my watch...

You chose the wrong knife

 By: Lasluo : March 12th, 2013-14:10
The mammoth one would have been perfect. One of the most beautiful pocket knives I've ever seen. Cannot help but marvel the artwork on the blade. Amazing. I must say you took a misstep here. Best, Your nephew PS. I tried to browse through a dictionary to ...

Kari

Such a refreshing post

 By: cisco : March 12th, 2013-15:15
Seeing a watch in a plasstic bag makes me think that it will suffocate ^^ So much better breathing the fresh air. What a fantastic caliber. Enjoy your marvel. Francois

I will.

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-15:28
I also ordered some made-to-measure straps from Patek in order to wear the watch in the most comfortable way. After one year of wearing, the watch will have the needed scratches and the strap will be nice and soft. Best, Kari

Huge congrats Kari!

 By: foversta : March 12th, 2013-15:29
A beautiful watch obviously... a classic and timeless style... the watch is perfect on your wrist. And also thanks for the message behind the post... Fx

Thanks Foversta,

 By: dr.kol : March 12th, 2013-15:37
I did not try to hide the message. And when my 5131G arrives, it will fly out from the packing directly to my wrist. Then it will stay on the wrist for quite some time. My 5170J is now having that destiny. I hope that as many collectors as possible would ...

Enjoy it Kari

de-bagging of the watch. thank you for sharing!!

I think everybody buying a watch should

de-pack it. If somebody would buy very nice sporting cars and store those in a dark garage under factory's protective wax, he would be considered insane. Right? The fun of owning a sporting car is to drive it. The fun of owning a nice watch is to wear it!...

I disagree with you Kari...!!

Everything you mentioned is right, but a Toyota Altis 1600cc costs more than your watch and porch, from where I'm based. I 'hate' your country but love your Patek...!!! :) The sad truth is all Pateks cost the same worldwide, that's discrimination! Big con...

news from yesterday's announcement. It's official a Toyota Altis costs more than a Porche 911 in excess of approximately $25k, we are a 'fun' country where Toyota driver despise Porche owners from now on, Mech.

I'm learning every day.

I did not know that your country is also called "Fun" country. I always thought it's a "Fine" country. Best, Kari

So awesome Kari!

Thanks for such a great intro to your 5170! I was on the edge of my seat every picture.. Enjoy her to the fullest!

Nice that you enjoyed.

 By: dr.kol : March 13th, 2013-10:38
Now we all are excited to see how 5170G looks like. Best, Kari

It's a beautiful watch from Patek

 By: Greenwatch : March 13th, 2013-07:54
That I also have been interested lately and maybe my first chrono watch to complement my AC, Travel Time and Nautilus 5711. Thanks for sharing and I hope Patek will come up with a G variant this year as rumored.

It's not a rumor

 By: dr.kol : March 13th, 2013-11:06
If you have been following Patek Forum you perhaps noticed that by accident Patek had the instructions for their 5170G in their home pages. However, it was quickly noticed by them and removed from internet. We will see the new 5170G soon. I hope it's stun...

Gorgeous!

In a way I agree.

It is funny how much we pay attention to the color of the case while from inside watches are just the same. I am not crazy about yellow gold nowadays. However, there are a couple of Pateks I can easily consider in YG. Those are the classic ones like 5196,...

Yes, the feeling of winding is perfect. Even I like the winding feeling of 5070 and Datograph, this 5170 over-performs both. I tried it in the Paris Salons, I totally understand your feeling :-) Will be in Basel next month and can't wait to see the new wh...
