The Nautilus Genève auction analysis

 By: Miranda : November 13th, 2018-14:27
Craziness. Even as a die hard fan of the Nautilus I can not explain just what has happened over the last few days. The original 3700 in all guises had exploded, it has becone “Daytonafied” Even the unpopular 3700 s/g has tripled in value If it was just on...

Oh come on

A 2018 5711 for quadruple the retail is unfathomable Just for an added word The world is gone berserk It’s not about collecting anymore what a true shame

definitely

 By: aston.db4 : November 13th, 2018-16:31
I totally agree, for many buyers it's all about speculative investment potential nowadays without any passion for the watches itself.

I love the 5270R even though it is not very collectible. I wear it with joy. ...

Exquisite [nt]

Indeed, thanks Imran for the exhaustive recap. It looks like anything called Nautilus is earmarked for success these days...

 By: FabR : November 13th, 2018-15:26
Perhaps expectedly, the big results of the SS models are finally bringing everything else along. I love the Nautilus, but this seems to have reached levels of pure market craziness now... One thing is for sure though: for as long as this lasts, it's a fas...

thanks for the recap

I have one business partner who owns a 3700 in yellow gold and steel. Since I know him maybe 5 years now, he always has the same watch except the last time I saw him, he was wearing a Reverso. I'll ask him what happened to the Patek Philippe and let him k...

Wow, this is crazy!

 By: doublesix : November 13th, 2018-18:34
What is driving this mania? Three years ago, nautilus’ were trading at retail. What is the impetus for this bubble or is demand so great that prices will remain elevated? The nautilus never seemed like a limited edition type of watch until the past couple...

Or money laundry [nt]

I don't think I will sell mine (5711) as it's my daily wear. Have always wanted a Nautius since 2006 but 2017 I bought one

 By: 中野れい : November 13th, 2018-20:05
With these crazy prices I still don't think of selling (could sell with handsome profit) as I will never ever buy again (or can buy) once I sell mine. My one and only Patek Hope to have a 2nd one in the future, who knows

Totally over rated in my opinion

 By: sham1 : November 13th, 2018-20:45
I agree that the Nautilus is an iconic watch but it represents poor value for money at current auction and used prices. With the same amount of money, one could secure a chronograph or perpetual calendar or even a perpetual calendar chronograph ie a 3970....

Gentleman I think it’s silly. The craze of 5711 will now get worst...

 By: Horology75 : November 13th, 2018-21:07
Another financial meltdown down and a lot of people will suffer ...don’t get me wrong but lot of these wat he’s will become safe queens like my 3712 which I stopped wearing as it’s an investment grade bond which has given me probably by far 5 x the return...

at the outset let me state that I am no fan of the Nautilus but ..

 By: watch-guy.com : November 13th, 2018-23:16
I have desired a ref 3700 for a while watching it rocket to stratospheric proportions About 5 years ago was offered one for 40k and I passed It seems to be to e the PN of the Patek world will it crash and burn and all end in tears - who knows but I think ...

Speculative bubble...

 By: lascases : November 14th, 2018-00:51
Most buyers are in the market for a limited time only and believe the Nautilus was a „rare“ watch. In fact it is the entry level Patek. This limited oversight of most buyers at the current price point distorts prices. The bubble will burst as Patek will c...

I'm sitting back, munching on popcorn, and watching the show

while I wear my pedestrian watches.

I think the all platinum watch is really special

I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on the prices. Best, Martin

I had scanned the various results too and was a little surprised at the levels being reached for the Nautilus over the last few days.

 By: Jay (Eire) : November 14th, 2018-04:31
The Tiffany 5711 just blew me away. It seems buyers/speculators and perhaps collectors are inferring collectabilty in modern Tiffany dialed Pateks from that which we see in the vintage co-signed Pateks. I really don't believe this is a valid conclusion, b...

Nautilus

 By: Baron - Mr Red : November 14th, 2018-05:11
As a style, it’s not one for me. Having said that, nothing much surprises me now with markets. Patek has made a distinct move to attract younger buyers. It’s working.

divided loyalties...

 By: mahesh : November 14th, 2018-13:12
it is one of the very few PPs that is intriguing to me but i also equally know i'm almost not going to have it...neither i've a series of PP purchase so the AD gets me one nor i'm going to pay anything on top of retail.... with that, i actually don't give...

It is quite incredible...

 By: thomaspp : November 14th, 2018-13:54
As an owner of a 3700 and vintage daytonas, I will say it is quite incredible to see what is happening. There has never been a time where the divide between what is desired and what is not has been so great. Some amazing watches sit and cannot be sold, ye...

It's a shocker. The market buys it, the design the slimness of a Nautilus.

 By: geross : November 14th, 2018-14:05
Slim, sleek and sexy. A chicks magnet of a watch. Gerald Genta is a genius in design. Geross. 😉

I have said it before and I will say it again.......

 By: Conkers : November 14th, 2018-16:39
.......it takes all the attention away from other amazing references which is good for buyers of other models! Long may this Nautilus craze continue!

+++1! [nt]

Any love for the 5800?

 By: Stylophile : November 14th, 2018-18:00
The forgotten 38mm Nautilus Have had it for over 10 years and love the size and wearability; I don’t really care about the market trends and the crazy after market and auction prices for the Nautilus ...

This one is very rare!

 By: 中野れい : November 14th, 2018-19:03
It could fetch more than 5711... but don't ever sell. Congratulation!

I like this one very much [nt]

 By: Passionata_george : November 15th, 2018-00:37

Thank you for this great Nautilus summary!

 By: HSTE : November 15th, 2018-11:38
Some years ago I got my 3700 in almost mint condition with original box (not cork) and „Certificat d‘Origine“ for what I thought to be an outrageous price. It is my only PP. And it came at a fraction by last weekends‘ standards. Is it relevant to me: not ...

Wow...your watch is in pristine condition!!

 By: Patekfinity : November 15th, 2018-12:05
I have not seen many 3700 with the lumes looking like new as your watch! Most have deteriorated or discolored... Do you wear it often or is it because you keep it safe somewhere. The watch looks great!

Lot 131, 5711 with Tiffany dial

 By: CastorKrieg : November 26th, 2018-05:45
I heard this caused some drama in the NYC store - the buyer flipped the watch immediately after receiving it, and apparently some ADs did not want to sell it to non-vetted customer.

I wouldn’t, and don’t, pursue this reference at these prices, but Im not sure why we’re surprised and / or skeptical. As you write, we’ve seen this before. We will see it again

 By: 5980 : November 27th, 2018-17:14
Is it sustainable? As I said, I’m not a buyer. Do I expect valuations for this and every other “asset” class to decelerate and / or decline? I do. So goes the global economic cycle. Said differently, if I were an actual “flipper” as my handle suggests...I...
